AMUSING-- about multidimensionality
."A SQUARE" (Edwin A. Abbott), Flatland: a Romance of Many Dimensions, a humorous 19th-century novel that helps clarify the notion of multidimensionality .

THE ONLY TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED WILL BE:
         Simple HTML.
         Client-side image maps.
         (Possibly) The 3D animation constructor at alice.org.

ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING

There will be three assignments, a test and a final project.

Assignment 1.  Due 20 Oct.

Exploration of ZigZag(tm) as an example of an interactive space and construct logic.

Familiarize yourself with the ZigZag universe and prepare a ZigZag dataset.

In a group, create an interesting dataset using ZigZag.  Present it to the class in person.

Find two "unrelated" books (in English) which you find interesting, BUT ON SUBJECTS YOU DO NOT PREVIOUSLY KNOW ABOUT-- I recommend browsing the second floor of the Media Center).  Read them to find interesting ideas, and map whatever connections you can find between them, with explanation.  B4 size paper recommended.  (If you make it larger, please copy it into a B4 version.)

MAP A SUBJECT THAT INTERESTS YOU, especially with the idea of parallel access by a student choosing whatever part he or she likes.

The test (on history and concepts of hypertext) will be given on December 15, when I am out of the country for an international conference, and the marked tests will be returned to you after New Year's.

In a group, choose a subject and choose a hypertext form in which to represent it, and create a hypertext about it.  (Can also be fiction or Manga.  Note: the hypertext does not have to be on a computer, but could be on paper, for instance, connected by string, or paragraph numbers.)
